(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Wayne Dickinson (Somerset, Mass. / Celtic Judo Club) won gold at the Eurometropole Masters tournament in Mouvaux, France on Sunday, leading Team USA to a five-medal finish at one of the world’s premier events for athletes ages 30 and over which featured more than 700 competitors.

2023 Eurometropole Masters Results

Dickinson claimed his title in the Male 7 (60-64) 81 kg category where he finished the day with a 4-0 record in a stacked field. After an overtime win by decision against 2021 Veteran World bronze medalist Gilbert-Alois Pantillon (SUI) in the first round, Dickinson threw Lee Adams (GBR) first with an o uchi gari (major inner reaping) and then with a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw) for a pair of waza-ari (half-point) scores. In the semifinals, Dickinson controlled the bout quickly, throwing Christian Marey (FRA) with a drop seoi for a waza-ari and moving into a pin to close the match. In the finals, Dickinson countered Abdelkader Boulatika (FRA) with a throw for a waza-ari score.

Arthur Scotto (Leonia, N.J. / NYAC) won silver in the M7 (60-64) +100 kg event, finishing 2-1 in his round robin field. Scotto defeated both Jean-Marc Pace (FRA) and Antonino Vitanza (ITA) by ippon (instant win), but missed the top step of the podium with a loss to Didier Allot (FRA).

Team USA saw two athletes reach the podium in the M9 (70-74) with George Stein (Atlanta, Ga. / Black Ice Judo / Waka Mu Sha) and George Van Amson (New York City, N.Y. / NYAC) winning silver and bronze, respectively. Stein took the first position in his three-man round robin with a 2-0 record while Van Amson finished 1-2, defeating 1972 Olympian Terry Watt (IRL), but dropping his match against 2022 Vet World Champion Jos Wennekers (NED). Stein and Van Amson would face off in the semis with Stein taking the win to advance to the finals where he lost by a waza-ari to Wennekers.

A bronze medalist at the 2021 Veteran World Championships, Miguel Diaz (Houston, Texas) went 3-1 in the M3 (40-44) 81 kg division, defeating Cedric Hemery (FRA) and Olivier Dupuis (FRA) before falling in the semifinals to 2021 Vet World silver medalist Patrascu Octavian (MDA). Diaz came back in the next round to defeat Jonathan Fonknechten (FRA) by ippon and claim bronze.

Ray Marquez (Myrtle Beach, S.C. / Myrtle Beach Judo), a medalist at both the 2021 and 2022 Vet Worlds fought for a medal in France, but placed fifth in the M5 (50-54) 81 kg event with a 2-2 record.

A silver medalist at the 2018 Vet Worlds, 72-year-old Arthur Canario (New York City, N.Y. / New York Athletic Club) competed in the M8 (65-69) event and finished fifth against a round robin field.
